Dash cams have long been the norm in other countries, and now more Americans are discovering the many reasons dash cams are totally worth it. Installing a video camera to record what you see through your windshield won’t make you a better driver, but it does provide protection, in a variety of ways. Depending on the size of your dash cam memory, you may be able to review video footage going back several days.
Protection against fraud
One of the reasons dash cams took off in other countries first is that, in places such as Russia and Brazil, car accident fraud had become more common. Drivers began to realize that a dash cam provides surveillance footage that could protect them from scams by accurately documenting who and what caused the car accident. Whatever the con, having irrefutable video footage can really protect your assets.
Protection against liability
It’s not just fraud that drivers need protection from, but unfair insurance settlements as well. When an accident occurs, it’s often one driver’s word against the other’s, and while insurance investigators try to take skid marks and other physical evidence into account, they often don’t get it right. With a dash cam in your car, you may introduce dash cam footage as evidence, so your premiums needn’t go up for someone else’s mistake.
Protection against the law
Police get preferential treatment in court, so having video footage of the moments leading up to receiving a ticket can help drivers prove their innocence in court, particularly when it comes to moving violations such as failure to stop or running a red light. The dash cam may also capture audio of your interaction with a police officer, offering some protection against potential police abuses.
Keep friends and family honest
When your teenager, friend, or neighbor borrows your car, they may not tell you everything that happens while they’re gone. With a dash cam installed, you can merely check the footage to find out how that mystery dent really got there. Or, in the event your teen missed curfew, parents may finally find out where their kids were, being out all night.
Viral videos
You never know what you might see through the window of your car, but eventually, it’s going to be something amazing, unbelievable, or at least hilarious. Because a dash cam is always recording, it will always capture the moment for posterity, even the unexpected ones. Will it be interesting enough to go viral? You won’t have a chance to find out unless you install a dash cam to capture it on video in the first place!
